And now, on to the blogging biz! Still not quite at the $500 but this is the closest I've gotten and I'm stoked! Blogging is a LONG PLAY. It is not a get rich quick scheme.

Blogging Income in August:

Total Blogging Income: $412.80 v. $263.80 last month.

Blogging Expenses in August:

  • Pinterest Virtual Assistant: $30 -- I had a LOT of travel in August (personal and work) so I hired a VA to help for a few days.
  • Facebook Ads: $20 -- Tested this out and it was pretty successful.
  • Canva: $10 -- I'm working on beefing up my Pinterest images and decided to check out Canva's premium subscription.

Blogging Net Income: $352.80

NOTE: I also launched an internship program last month so I've got some more hands on deck. My team is working to bring you the best content ever on a much more timely basis.

Total Online Income for AUGUST: $2,017.80

Blogging strategy

Now to give some more explanation on my blogging strategy. I feel like this is an aspect missing from many income reports (including some of my past updates).

I believe the recipe for success requires 3 key ingredients:

Let's dive into each of these areas.

One of the big takeaways I learned from the course Pinteresting Strategies (one of the BEST investments ever) is that if you want to blog for income, you have to give the people what they want. Recognizing this, I have started to focus primarily on listicles because 21 ways saved in 2016 continues to be my best performing post so far!

I now have another post that's starting to do well called 11 ways to save on groceries. Initially, this post was called "how to save money on groceries without eating like crap" and I had about 5 tips listed. The post wasn't really performing well, so I figured it was time for a content upgrade. I added 6 more tips, a punchier title and a better pin and got way more traffic coming in on that post (and earned $50 from it and counting)!

Ahh, so the summer slump I talked about last month has ended, thank goodness.

Traffic went up to approximately 27,000 page views from 17,000 page views in July!

How did I do this? As I mentioned above, I had a lot of writing assignments in addition to travel for my day job and personal reasons. This meant I had very little time to focus on Pinterest. In July, 94% of traffic came from Pinterest. In August, almost 50% of traffic came from Facebook and 47% from Pinterest, woot woot!

Apart from boosting two posts, in the first two weeks of the month, I also focused on participating a ton in Facebook groups (specifically answering questions and being a resource to folks). This resulted in the bulk of affiliate sales from Pinterest Strategies

Even if you don't have the time to pin manually (it requires 30-60 minutes time commitment each day), I highly recommend this ebook. Using the tips I learned, I redid all my pins and went from a few dozen repins using BoardBooster to one pin having over 1k repins in 2 weeks (woot, woot)!

Blogging education is sooo important you guys. I just don't have the time to spend researching and figuring these things out on my own and I've recognized the value in investing in these tools.

You can grab your copy of the Pinterest ebook using my link.

NOTE: I am still reading through this ebook called Strategies Worth Sharing which talks about Facebook and I'm starting to implement the tips slowly but surely.

I took an affiliate marketing course back in March and then went back through it in June. Sure enough, there were soooo many things I was missing. Unfortunately, affiliate marketing isn't as simple as adding a banner in the middle of your article, you really have to carefully craft a call to action that will entice people to click on your link. You also want to build trust and ensure that you aren't being too pushy.

I am so glad I invested in this course, because it has saved me so much time in terms of figuring out the ins and outs of monetizing my blog. I also love that the course instructor offers lifetime access so I can always refer to it as often as needed. At $200, it is pricey but I paid for it in 2 installments. Plus I enjoyed it so much that I became an affiliate and have earned my money back and then some.

You can sign up for the course right now using this link.

NOTE: I have also found that sticking to a blogging schedule has helped me tons!

Blogging income $800 + Freelance writing income $1,000.

My biggest goal for September is to launch my ebook. The date is September 28th eek! I've been working HARD on this product and cannot wait to share it with you all. I'll also be doing my first webinar and will update you on the date!

Now I'd love to hear from you, how'd you do with your side hustle goals last month? Let me know in the comments.
