5 Self-Affirmations to Get You Through the Week

Growing up my mom would always tell me, "Kim, there's power in your words." As a teenager my response to this statement would often be an eye roll (sorry, mom)! But seriously, hadn't my mom heard that sticks and stones could break my bones but words could never hurt me -- words were just words. But as I've gotten older, I realized that she was right on the money. Words can indeed hurt my potential to tap into my God-given talents and my ability to share them with those around me.

I want to make an important note here that words are not just the words we verbalize but also those we visualize AKA our thoughts. Learning to think and speak positive words has been huge for me as a way to overcome life's obstacles.

Here's a quick example. One day in 2005, I was extremely ill in the days leading up to a final exam. I didn't have enough time to study and wasn't sure how I would be able to drive myself to school much less write anything on that paper. However, when I got into the car, I started repeating the following:

"I can make it."

"I'll be back home in three hours." 

"I'll be okay."

The drive ended up being much more manageable than expected so I decided to use the same approach right before the exam. I also said a quick prayer and then gave it 120% even though I was feeling sick. 

I did not allow myself to focus on the fact that I was starving (because I wasn't able to eat solids) or that I only reviewed some of my notes. Instead, I kept thinking about ways to tap into what I'd learned in class a few weeks prior, my general knowledge base and my ability to craft clever responses.

My final grade ended up being 70 on the dot -- the minimum score for an A. I was in shock! From that point forward, I've hung on to positive thinking as a way to affirm my faith and achieve much more than I ever thought possible. Thank you, mom!
